Tips to Reduce Vehicle Wear & Tear

Everyone knows cars depreciate over time—it's only natural. But there are a number of steps and precautions you can take to reduce the wear and tear on your vehicle. Following these simple guidelines for driving and auto maintenance can help keep your car running smoothly and looking nice for years to come, saving you money in the end.

  • Get your oil changed regularly. This is an important step that many people ignore. It's important to check your oil and have it changed regularly, because oil is so crucial to keeping an engine running smoothly. Most recommendations say you should have your oil changed every 3,000 to 6,000 miles, although you should consult your vehicle's owner's manual to find out exactly how often you should be changing yours.
  • Inspect your tire pressure. Driving around with tires that aren't properly inflated can wreak havoc on your gas mileage, and can also increase the wear and tear on your tires. Not only that, but it can also be dangerous. Be sure to check your tire inflation regularly and inflate them when they need it—but be sure not to over-inflate them! Tires that are over-inflated can be just as bad as under-inflated tires. Find the level of inflation that's just right.
  • Check and change your air filter. Your air filter is the part of your engine that collects the dust and grit from the air. When it gets clogged, your engine may not run as smoothly. Check the filter and try to change it regularly—most experts recommend about once a year. You can get your filter changed when you stop into your local service department for an oil change!
  • Protect your car from the elements. Do you live in a climate with inclement weather? Or one where the sun's always beating down? Weather can damage the paint job on your vehicle, and that paint's not just there for looks—it protects the metal underneath from rusting! Try to keep your car out of the elements when possible.
  • Don't drive aggressively. Speeding, hard braking, hard turning, idling and more can make your car and engine wear out faster. Try to drive smoothly and cautiously, and you'll be rewarded with a vehicle that lasts an awful lot longer than you may have expected!

These tips don't seem so difficult, do they? If you follow them, you're sure to see your car last through the years. Interested in more tips for caring for your vehicle? The experts at Fullerton Chrysler Jeep Dodge can help. Visit our dealership in Somerville, New Jersey to learn more!
