Stock valve materials have been upgraded to a long lasting alloy of aluminum and steel. An engine constructer must be able to choose wisely on which valves for maximum performance on their engines. Unless one is careful in there observation, one alloy is similar to the other with the exception of steel valve that have black nitride coating or coated titanium valves. The difference between these two is the material used for coating but not the alloy used in the making.
Exhaust valves are made of steel that have higher heat requirements and resistance. The most commonly used materials for exhaust valves are austenitic, which are made of stainless steel alloys like the 21-2N and 21-4N. Even though the austenitic stainless steel has the capability of handling high temperatures, it is still softer than the martens tic steel, hence cannot be toughened by heat-treating.
