In transport companies, lifting heavy loads had always been a big problem. A fast and efficient mechanism was needed which provides the safety of the workers and easy lifting of load without damaging the load. To solve this problem cranes were invented. From the day of the invention, cranes are still fulfilling the needs of lifting the heavy loads and many other tasks. With time different types of cranes arrived in the market for specific type of uses.
Cranes are used each day to lift heavy loads without putting much human efforts, which saves a lot of time. To operate crane a crane operator is required who has the complete knowledge of the crane and its working. Without the knowledge of the machinery and working of the crane, the chances of accidents are increased. There have been many accidents due to improper operations and wrong handling of the heavy loads.
Cranes generally falls in two categories: Fixed crane and mobile crane. One another category is also considered known as overhead cranes. There are so many types of cranes in various shapes and sizes for different types of applications. The introduction of the different types of cranes was due to the different types of the needs in different companies and industries. There are many types of cranes used in the transport companies.
The most common cranes used in the transport industry are the mobile cranes, attached to a truck. The truck features a stand ard crane, which is capable of carrying load ranging from 15 to hundreds of tons, including different types of cargo. The mobility provides some advantages like doesn't require any additional equipment or vehicle to transport the load from one place to another. These mobile cranes can carry the load on the road, although the speed of the crane is slow while carrying heavy loads.
Inside the building overhead cranes (also known as bridge crane) are used by many companies. Overhead cranes and gantry cranes are similar, both moves horizontally on runways or rails. Overhead cranes are consist of a parallel runways having specific gap. In the gap a bridge travels on the runway. A hoist is connected with the bridge, which is used to lift the heavy loads. The typical use of overhead crane can also be found in the maintenance and manufacturing businesses. Gantry cranes comes in various types, some with single beam and some with two beams.
Operating crane requires good knowledge and experience of the working of the crane. Most of the companies hire only certified crane operators. Hiring certified crane operators lowers the risk of accidents. These operators are trained by some experienced operators and know about the necessary precautions needed for the safety of the workers and the load.
