Tips for Staying Safe While Driving

If you're like most people, you spend a good deal of time in your vehicle. Between driving to and from work, to and from all your social obligations and taking trips and vacations, the average American spends over 500 hours a year in their vehicle, according to some studies!

All that driving puts you at risk of accidents and other dangers. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to remain safe as you navigate the open road. Here, we've compiled a number of them to help you be safer throughout the time you spend in your vehicle.

  • Obey the speed limit. Speeding is the cause of many accidents and crashes. It's better to be safe and late than the alternative, so slow down! Driving just a few miles per hour over the speed limit can greatly increase your risk. Obeying posted speed limits is the safe, cautious and sensible thing to do.
  • Plan your route. Not only will it prevent you from getting lost and having to stop for directions, but it's much safer! If you know exactly where you're going, you'll be able to focus your attention on driving safely.
  • Don't drive when impaired… by alcohol and drugs, but also by emotions or fatigue. Driving while tired or while upset can be dangerous, as well. It's better to wait until you're rested or have calmed down before hitting the road.
  • Keep your eyes on the road… and off your cell phone. Texting while driving is illegal in many states, and some states even ban talking on the phone while driving. Put the phone down, and while you're at it, keep your eyes off your music player or the cheeseburger in your hand. These things all take your attention off the road as well, creating more risk.
  • Be mindful of the weather and other conditions. Traffic, weather, roadwork and more can cause danger to motorists. Try to avoid driving when the conditions aren't ideal, and if you can't avoid it, then be even more cautious than you normally would be.
  • Be cautious and careful around others. While it's tempting to assume everyone on the road is as safe a driver as you are, you know that's not true. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others, and always be alert.

There are dangers on the road, but if you remain cautious and careful, you can stay safe as you drive. Interested in more safe driving tips from the friendly and professional staff at Honda of Toms River? Just visit our Toms River, New Jersey auto dealership today!
