An oil change may be a simple auto repair service, but still things can go wrong. One of the problems associated with an oil change are stripped oil drain plugs.
Oil drain plugs are easily damaged during an oil change. Especially back then, most oil drain plugs are very soft. Nowadays, however, the damage normally occurs on the threaded hole inside the heavy steel pan. This happens because car manufacturers use cheaper and thinner parts in order to lessen vehicle production cost. When it became normal to use stamped aluminum as materials for oil pans, the problem with stripped oil drain plugs begin to soar. It has become common to see a huge hole in oil pans as a result of damaged thread on the plug.
To prevent such problems, most reputable auto repair shops replace oil drain plugs every time they perform an oil change service to prevent major damages on the oil pans. For some, however, an oil pan repair kit is very applicable. Oil pan repair kits come with inserts that is installed by drilling out the pan while it is still on the vehicle. Because of these kits, auto repair technicians can use a tap and die set to make a new set of threads in the oil pan. The final decision as to whether the oil pain will be replaced or just repaired depends on you.
For quick oil pan repairs, auto repair technicians use a universal rubberized oil drain plugs. These are self-expanding plugs made from very thick rubber. Once installed, hey tighten in the hole as they expand. Universal rubberized oil drain plugs, however, are not permanent solution to oil change problems. This is only used as a first aid; when you need a quick fix. You still need to go to the auto repair shop for a complete repair.
As a permanent fix, auto repair mechanics recommend installing quick drain valve which are made of heavy brass and screw. Quick drain valves are meant to replace oil drain plugs. Upon installation of quick drain valves, you no longer have to screw or unscrew anything during an oil change service. This is because most of these quick drain valves have a mechanism that allows oil drainage with just one push of a button.
These are but some repair scenarios for oil change problems. The worst thing that can happen is if the oil pan needs to be changed. Oil pans are very expensive. So troubleshoot problems before they become worse.
