Sudden acceleration can happen at any given time and the only way to be prepared for it is to know what to do if it does happen. Many people panic and lose their composure, which causes them to make irrational decisions and put their lives at risk as well as the lives of the people around them.
The reason for sudden acceleration can be more than one and one of a million possibilities. One can be that your accelerator simply becomes sticky and gets stuck to the floor, causing your engine to rev and increase to top speeds. It could also be that a rug under your feet has moved by the pedal causing it to get stuck. If you add your own mats to your vehicle make sure that they are secure in place, especially the driver's side.
If you do end up experiencing sudden acceleration, we have put together some things that you should consider doing to help keep yourself safe during this turmoil:
- Brake. Right when you realize your car isn't slowing down or is accelerating when you don't want it to, hit the brakes. Don't brake abruptly unless it is necessary, if you have time to help yourself without braking hard then do so. Pump the brakes to see if it may be your brakes that are the problem and are faulty. If the car really isn't slowing down and is getting faster than complete the next step carefully.
- Down shift. A way to help your car slowdown in this situation is by down shifting slowly. Don't shift down more than one gear at a time. In lower gears your car can't go over a certain speed so if you shift down then your car will slow down to a safer speed. You should shift it to neutral, by doing so your car can't speed up. You will hear the engine revving and it may sound like it's accelerating but it's not.
- Keep away from others. Once in neutral, remain calm and be aware of your surroundings. Don't let yourself lose your composure because there are cars around you and you have the responsibility of making the right decisions to keep yourself and them out of danger when you can.
Unintended acceleration is a horrifying situation, remember to remain calm and follow these steps. Call for help immediately when you realize this is happening. If you are able to get to the side of the road don't try to drive again, call for someone to pick your car up and get it checked out!
