The holidays are upon us, and you know what that means—holiday vacations. Whether your road trips are to visit family or just to get away, you'll be in the car an awful lot during December and January, and so it's important to take steps to stay as safe as possible.
Here, we've put together a number of tips that will help keep you and yours safe this holiday season! Just keep our tips in mind as you travel, even if it's just over to the next town.
- Avoid speeding. Driving too fast can be extremely dangerous, and keeping your speed down can keep you safe. On top of that, it's especially important to pay attention to the speed limit in unfamiliar towns. Nobody wants to get a ticket in another state!
- Get your vehicle inspected before your trip. You'd hate to break down or have car trouble while on the road, so have everything checked out before you embark! This way, problems can be solved before they become more serious issues.
- Plan your route. You don't want to get lost in an area you don't know well. Map out the route you plan to take before you leave for your trip. It's also a good idea to keep a map or a GPS handy in your vehicle just in case.
- Check your tire pressure. Driving around on underinflated tires can wreak havoc on your fuel economy. Before your trip, have your tire pressure checked, and if you need more air, fill 'em up! This will improve your gas mileage as well as your handling.
- Stock up on the essentials. This includes emergency gear like a spare tire, jack, flares, maps and more, as well as things you'll need on a long trip—snacks, bottles of water, some great music and your friends or family.
- Pay attention to other motorists. You can't assume that others on the road are as safe and conscientious as you are. Be aware of everything that's going on around you, and be prepared if other motorists begin driving erratically or make sudden stops or turns.
